How is a NOC designed?

The ideal design gives the NOC its own space. A wall can be covered by video screens, each of which shows a real-time view of overall network performance, as well as accidents and active alarms. The video ads are arranged in a grid and connected so that they can act as a single high-resolution unit. The size of the physical NOC area and the team NOC area depends on the size of the organization and the data center.

Warnings are displayed in the video wall for the first time, especially technicians who are experiencing a problem and which device or line is affected. Video screens can also send messages and keep track of time, so technicians can plan ongoing problems that can affect larger network operations. The video wall is also connected to individual workstations throughout the room where the technicians are responsible for monitoring a particular technology or critical point. From there, technicians can troubleshoot related issues and follow the protocols that were developed to resolve the incident.

Each workstation has multiple monitors so that technicians can analyze information faster and more easily and react more efficiently. Each station is also connected to a kind of PA system, with which technicians can communicate with one another in good time and exchange information. Technicians can also enter warning details on the video wall screen that anyone can review.

In large companies, you will often find a separate room dedicated to a team that handles serious network incidents.

As a rule, a NOC takes a hierarchical approach to incident management. Technicians are classified according to their skills and experience in solving specific problems - level 1, 2 or 3 in general. Once a NOC technician discovers a problem, he creates a ticket that classifies the problem based on the type of warning and severity, as well as other criteria. If the NOC technician assigned to a particular problem level cannot solve it quickly enough, continue to the next level and intensify it until the current problem is completely resolved.

The combination of powerful equipment and highly specialized personnel who work according to very specific protocols enables the NOC to work without interruption.
