Many types of managers oversee the day-to-day operations of internal staff, but it is the responsibility of field managers to manage the staff who travel to customer sites. Also referred to as field services managers or field operations managers, these professionals are responsible for hiring, training and supervising agents in the field. Field managers work for a wide range of industries, particularly those with outsourced sales representatives or field technicians, such as pharmaceutical companies, computer repair companies, HVAC companies, and medical equipment manufacturers. These managers use powerful observation, leadership and analytical skills on a daily basis. They are usually full-time and can work more than the usual 40 hours per week if travel time is taken into account.
Duties and responsibilities of the field manager
Field managers work in a variety of industries. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary, but there are many basic job-related tasks, such as:
Coordination of field personnel
Field managers typically oversee an entire area and are responsible for coordinating domain employees to cover all customers in a specific area. They plan journeys, assign clients to specific employees in the field, and organize client-employee meetings.
Recruitment and training of field workers
It is up to managers in the field to hire new employees and make sure they are properly trained before allowing them to work in the field. Field managers interview candidates, organize new internal and supplier training programs, and travel with new employees on site to make sure they fully understand their responsibilities.
Evaluate employee performance
Field managers regularly conduct performance reviews of all employees in the field. They create reports that address any issues and highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each team member. They create plans to help industry employees improve, track employee progress towards the goals of these plans, and report performance to HR staff and senior executives.
Fleet management
In most cases, a field team uses company vehicles when visiting customer sites. It is the responsibility of field managers to ensure that all vehicles are properly maintained. They generate vehicle maintenance and repair reports, plan fleet service and develop a fleet vehicle care budget.
