Duties and responsibilities of the database analyst

Database analysts organize and make sense of information collections to create functional database systems. They evaluate, design, review and implement databases. They are also hired to maintain and update existing databases to better meet business needs. Database analysts can also play a role in database security and help train employees on the proper use of databases.

Database analysts do much of their work independently, but should check in regularly with management and database administrators to ensure that they collect and organize information in the manner required by the company. The latest projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that DBAs will see job growth of 11% through 2024. This will create approximately 13,400 jobs during this period.

Duties and responsibilities of the database analyst

The duties and responsibilities of a database analyst vary from project to project and from company to company. However, there are several common main tasks for almost all database analysts. A review of current job listings identified the following key tasks and responsibilities.

Organize your data

Database analysts must be able to collect relevant information and organize it in a logical and functional way. They will consult with management or administrators to determine what data should be included in the database system and then find the best ways to organize and store this information. Often they will create flowcharts and diagrams during this data construction phase to illustrate how the data will be classified and stored.

Design and implement databases

Most database analysts will need to design and implement a database system after working on organizing the data. They must be up-to-date with the latest database building practices and trends to perform these tasks. They must also master one or more programming languages, such as SQL, an industry standard.

Actions on documents

Documentation is a very important part of the database analyst's job. Every aspect of a database must be carefully recorded. These documents will serve as a reference for new employees and for future system maintenance. Therefore, database analysts must be able to communicate well through writing and be able to create flowcharts and diagrams.

Test and protection database

All databases must be tested for functionality and accuracy. Database analysts can perform tests before a new system is released, as well as periodic tests on existing systems to make sure they are operating satisfactorily. They can also implement security systems to prevent access to the information contained in the database by unauthorized users.
