DBA Duties and Responsibilities

Database administrators, or database administrators, are responsible for managing and maintaining all new and existing database software for their employers. Database administrators are very technical and pay close attention to detail so that errors in the database software can be identified quickly and efficiently. Database administrators work in traditional office environments, primarily on a computer. Most database administrators also follow their normal day shift hours, working eight to five, in addition to any necessary overtime. Database administrators often report directly to the database administrator or IT administrator

DBA Duties and Responsibilities

No two DBAs are exactly the same, as specific skills vary from employer to employer. However, after analyzing vacancies online, we have identified several key tasks and responsibilities common to the job:

Design and implement databases

The primary responsibility of a DBA is to create new database solutions and implement them properly. They create new databases based on the needs of the end users of the company and the general requirements of the project.

Monitor database performance

Database administrators monitor the overall performance of the database to ensure end users get the information they need as quickly as possible. If performance degrades, database administrators identify the problem and resolve it immediately.

Test the database

After implementing a new database solution, database administrators test the new solution to make sure it is working properly before fully implementing it. Testing involves creating test cases to identify and fix problems immediately.

Check access and security permissions

Database administrators are responsible for controlling all employee access and permissions to access their employers' databases. This often includes verifying access requests and revoking access from employees who left or left the company.

Write and keep documentation

Often times, DBAs are responsible for creating and managing all database documentation. This includes documentation of data-related policies and procedures, as well as data standards.
